Leonard “Lenny” Lyon is joining Norfolk-based Top Guard Security as chief operating officer, the firm announced.

Lyon had a 27-year distinguished career of Naval service, including as a member of the bomb squad, and retired with the rank of commander. He had provided security to Navy bases, ships, and even for the president of the United States. He had led Navy security efforts and ran multiple 24/7 operations centers onboard a carrier during Operation Iraqi Freedom and for the entire Atlantic Navy Fleet.

Top Guard Security, with offices in Hampton Roads, Richmond and Winchester, celebrated hiring its 1,000th employee in February. The company has been growing steadily since it was founded in Hampton in 1996, said President Nicole Stuart.

The company’s growth mirrors the needs of government facilities, educational institutions and corporations of all sizes to establish and implement more advanced security measures, according to a news release. Top Guard also provides ongoing training for security officers, including active threat training.

The 1,000th hire was Ron DeVoe, who was named quality assurance manager. DeVoe formerly served as a Portsmouth sheriff’s deputy and a Chesapeake police officer.
